A Psychological Exam to Buy or Own a Gun?
Another Outrageous Anti-Gun Idea Explored
by John Glatthar
The anti-gun Left never stops to examine how well their anti-gun schemes are faring. The ink has dried long ago on hundreds of laws that have passed in the 20th and 21st century. All with no measurable effect whatsoever on criminal behavior.
When the anti-gunners run into a brick wall in their quest toward citizen disarmament (their ultimate goal) they work on unconventional, creative ways such as what we see in House Bill 127 (HR127), the latest despicable and outrageous anti-gun bill sponsored by leftist Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, Democrat (naturally). It is the most vicious attack on the 2nd Amendment that I have seen in my lifetime. It is replete with a draconian list of restrictions on guns, on gun owners, anyone who wishes to buy a gun, and even on their own family.
The anti-gunners rarely review purposes that laws serve. A law exists for one reason: to create legal recourse in order to prosecute someone for breaking it. It doesn’t prevent anything, and no law ever has. Criminals, by definition, are people who do not obey the laws, so when you create these new laws regarding guns, they’re laughing at you! The crimes they’re planning on committing are much worse than the mere possession of a gun will ever be. Further, you create more criminals or, more specifically, good people who will refuse to comply with nonsensical, unconstitutional laws that violate their basic human rights. Non-compliance and criminal behavior are closely related but are not the same. See malum in se in contrast with malum prohibitum in a legal dictionary to understand this concept better.
Like an ugly, smelly landfill, HR127 has too many repulsive ingredients to inspect in one walk through. Let us look at just one of the parts – the requirement for a psychological examination to be able to get a license to even buy a gun. Yes, a federal license. Further, you will have to register all your guns, and pay an $800 annual fee for the privilege of receiving the license. An application for this license is under the authority of the United States Attorney General, an appointed (not elected) position. You cannot vote for or against him directly. Do you recall any AGs who were overtly hostile to gun rights recently? Do the infamous names of Janet “Waco Massacre” Reno or Eric “Fast and Furious” Holder ring any bells?
From HR127 , an application for a license requires the applicant:
Undergoes a psychological evaluation conducted in accordance with paragraph (2), and the evaluation does not indicate that the individual is psychologically unsuited to possess a firearm…”
Also, depending on the type of firearm the applicant wishes permission to own, he or she must submit to further more invasive scrutiny. Read on:
“.. the evaluation includes a psychological evaluation of other members of the household in which the individual resides; and as part of the psychological evaluation, the licensed psychologist will interview any spouse of the individual, any former spouse of the individual, and at least 2 other persons who are a member of the family of, or an associate of, the individual to further determine the state of the mental, emotional, and relational stability of the individual in relation to firearms.”
Holy smokes! Are you terrified yet? Even if you are not a gun owner, or if you have no desire to own a gun, or if you are opposed to allowing civilians to own guns in general, you should recoil in horror at this! Think of the abuse that will ensue. As if this does not already abuse Americans’ cherished freedoms already. In case you have forgotten (or were never taught), we have certain self-evident and inalienable rights. God-given rights. Or natural rights, for those who do not believe in God.
The government’s primary justification for existence is to protect life, liberty, and property. I would like to hear from Mrs. Jackson-Lee how this bill comports with our government’s most basic duties and how it serves to “secure the blessings of liberty,” as the first sentence in the U.S. Constitution states. It does not; it is the photographic negative of that.
It is not a matter of if this new gun control law would be abused; it is a matter of when and to what degree. Because I watch patterns, I know how gun grabbers think, and thus I can say with 100 percent certainty that this new law will be abused, terribly and tyrannically. Give them enough rope to hang you and they will. History shows us that tyrants are addicted to power. Their lust for it can never be quenched. Oh, and don’t depend on the U.S. Supreme Court to rule in favor of gun owners. Yes, the SCOTUS justices are all lawyers, but few have studied the true meaning, depth, history, and relevance of the 2nd Amendment in our Bill of Rights. Not much time is spent in law school on that amendment, according to the lawyer friends I know.
As for the psych exam, perhaps the widely-used Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory MMPI would be employed. Why re-create the wheel? It is a psychological test that assesses personality traits and psychopathology, and is primarily intended to test people who are suspected of having mental health or other clinical issues. Did you catch that? It is assumed from the start that you are mentally unbalanced. You must take the test to show to the Attorney General that you are not. In other words, “guilty until proven innocent.” Oh, by the way, it is used in prisons in America, including the biggest prison system in the county – the California Dept. of Corrections. Getting uncomfortable with this idea yet? You should be very uncomfortable.
The other problem with all this is that you can bet that the AG-assigned shrink will be told by his masters to “find” something - anything - that could be used to deny your application for a license to own a gun. And since the exam is interpretive, it would be ever so easy to do that.
If I were such an examiner, and you allowed me to shine flashlight in every corner of every room of your brain, I guarantee you that I would find some dark aspect, something that could be used against you. We are - all of us - sinners, but none of us wants a catalog of our sins and sinful thoughts to be exposed for the world to inspect. Oh they wouldn’t do that, you say? Are you 100% certain? Would you willingly expose yourself like that and take that chance? Remember that the exam results are interpretive and the interpreted results can be used against you. No gun for you! Nor any product or service in the future that the government thinks you ought not to have. Do you see now how this would work against you?
We NEVER want to get to a point in America where to buy or own a gun you must submit to a psychological examination by a State-appointed examiner. Oh, but, John, you say, how then, do we weed out the mentally ill? Good question! What percent of a given population are dangerously mentally ill? One percent? In viewing the movie “Good Guys with Guns,” I learned that 1 out of 6 Americans (17%) is taking some sort of anti-depressant drug. These drugs are having a definite effect on the population and are strongly suspected to be a contributing factor in mass shootings. Maybe we should explore this carefully and thoughtfully. I am open to discussions about ideas that do not require the other 99 percent to be subject to such intrusive examinations.
With no attempt at humor here, I believe that of all people who should be required to take the ol’ MMPI, it should be each and every politician who runs for office or who runs for re-election. Every one of them. How many of them do you think would like and approve that idea?
At Semper Firearms Training we encourage you to buy a good firearm, get trained in how to use it, and continue your firearms training as part of a defensive lifestyle.
