Shouldn't Progressives Encourage Progress in Personal Protection?
by John Glatthar

The term “state-of-the-art” is defined as “the most recent stage in the development of a product, incorporating the newest ideas and the most up-to-date features.”

Why use a stick for self defense when you can use a sword? Why use a sword when you can use a flintlock musket? Why depend on a musket when you can use a modern firearm? Maybe, one day, we will ask," why depend on a firearm when we can use a phaser?".

Unless there is some extraordinarily compelling reason prohibiting it, free people should have the right to purchase and own the most modern, up-to date products available in the marketplace. New car shows and electronic trade shows are enormously popular with people, for they are exciting and offer a preview into the latest products. I doubt there would be much interest in such shows if the wares on display were yesterday’s news and obsolete.

What I find peculiar is the blatantly contradictory notion - shared by many left-leaning, “Progressives” today - that anyone, at any time, has the right to buy any new, state of-the-art labor saving device or modern product, but that same right does not extend to firearms. No sir. No modern firearms for the average American, they say. Only members of law enforcement agencies and the armed services should be “allowed” to possess such modern devices. The very definition of a police state. Progressives adore police states, but only when they are the ones exercising the power. The hypocrisy is so offensively conspicuous that you need eclipse glasses to view it.

My sincere questions are these: what firearms, if any, do you think the general public should be “allowed” to buy and own? If not modern firearms, such a the popular AR-15 sporting rifle, then at what point in the centuries-long historical development of personal self defense weapons, including firearms, must we be forced to return to?  The era of the matchlock musket, such as the Pilgrims may have carried in 1620? Or perhaps a Civil War era breech loading rifle, circa 1865?

If you could exercise iron-fisted control of all 330 million Americans, would you allow us to own any firearm at all? No? Then how about non-firearm self-defense weapons like swords? No? How about folding knives or bats? Your answer will speak volumes about the tyrant within you that, if let loose, would be no better than any other tyrant from the past. And there have been hundreds in history.

I ask such questions of anti-gun people not out of a desire to play “gotcha,” but to elicit truthful answers. They are artful dodgers of such questions. As a gun owner, such evasions are completely unacceptable. I would appreciate truthful answers. In fact, I demand it! Let's face it,  their publicized statements to the media about their gun control goals have been anything but truthful. At least Progressive Democrat Beto O’Rourke said “Hell, yes I’m going to take your AR-15's. At least he was honest and open about his dark intentions. How refreshing to hear the truth.

I pray that they cease their tiresome hypocrisy, re-examine their positions on gun control, exercise less raw emotion, and engage in more intellectual honesty.

At Semper Firearms Training we encourage you to buy a good firearm, get trained in how to use it, and continue your firearms training as part of a defensive lifestyle.
